Call for Artists

Minnesota Museum of American Art

Open call to artists for revived Minnesota Biennial series.  Web info here. Deadline: April 18

In Summer 2014, MMAA will revive its Minnesota Biennial series. The competition will be opened up to all Minnesota artists to offer the public a snapshot of, quite simply, the best art and craft being made throughout the state today, and to celebrate the many different and unique forms that artistic ingenuity takes in Minnesota.

MMAA is reaching out to regional arts councils and centers to help spread the word throughout their respective communities. With the help of these networks, the biennial will reflect the diversity of artistic practice in Minnesota, honoring artists young and old, emerging and established, urban and rural, and those who work in traditional and unconventional media including but not limited to: painting, sculpture, printmaking, collage, clay, fabric, glass, wood, performance art, social practice, installation, video, and photography.

A panel of three jurors will curate the biennial from submissions. The jurying process will be blind (i.e., applicants will only be identified by their application number) and will take into consideration all submitted materials. Approximately 40 pieces will be selected; the total number will be determined by the installation needs of the selected pieces. Applicants will be judged primarily on the artistic merit of the work(s) submitted, but dedication to their art as can be discerned from their work history will also be considered.

Following and attached is information regarding the 2014 Minnesota Biennial including key dates, submission guidelines, and exhibition tour information. Please note the revised timeline.

Exhibition locations and dates:

MMAA Project Space | 332 N. Robert Street, St. Paul

June 12 – August 3, 2014

Lanesboro Art Center | 103 Parkway Ave N., Lanesboro (will show a limited selection)

August 16 – October 12, 2014

Submission period: March 10 – April 18, 2014

Submission requirements: A maximum of 20 digital images of no more than 4 pieces of existing work only, résumé (maximum 2 pages), and a one-page artist statement. All works submitted for consideration must be recent (preferably made in the last three years, not older than five years). Applications must be submitted online. Please work with your regional arts council or contact MMAA Curator of Engagement Christina Chang if you need assistance with the online application system.

Selections announced: May 7, 2014

Selected pieces due to MMAA by: May 28, 2014

Contact for MMAA: Christina Chang, 651.797.2853 or cchang@mmaa.org

Artistic and Entry Considerations: Jurors for the 2014 Minnesota Biennial will be selecting based on the materials submitted. For this reason, all entries will need to be of EXISTING work. A selection of works will travel to the Lanesboro Art Center for exhibition from August 16 to October 12, 2014. All works for Lanesboro must be for sale, so please keep this in mind when indicating sales preference.

To Apply: Online submission will be hosted by our media partner mnartists.org. To register, please go to http://apply.mnartists.org/mmaa-2014-mn-biennial. The site will be active beginning March 10, 2014 and remain open until 5 p.m. on April 18, 2014. All users must register with the system before proceeding. Successful registration will be indicated when you are able to log into the system. Most image file types are acceptable, but please remember that the jury will be reviewing works online only so please provide high-quality, clear images. Links to audio and video files are permitted for non-visual works. Please read the application guidelines carefully before starting.

Artists of color are strongly encouraged to submit works. We intend for the Biennial to be inclusive of the art and craft traditions of Laos, Somalia, and other diaspora communities in Minnesota, and their significant contributions to native and local art.
