News as of June 11, 2015

Here are a number of items of interest this week:

1. New Events – We have new information from our colleagues “Up North” about opportunities for artists.    Central MN Watercolorists are invited to participate in any of these events.
On the link below is the information for 3 separate events:

Nisswa  – The Majestic Pines Arts & Fine Crafts Fair,           June 20 and 21, 2015,
Nisswa Freedom Days Arts & Crafts Show,                                July 3, 2015
Nisswa Fall Festival/Smokin Hot BBQ Arts & Crafts Fair, September 19, 2015.

Click on the following link for specific information about them:

2.  REMINDER:  At the Art Crawl this Friday evening (5-9PM), CMW will have 2 artists, Robyn York and Mary Buhl,  providing watercolor demonstrations in the Paramount studios.  Stop down to say “Hi” and see what they’re up to.
In addition John Carter will be participating in this Friday”s art crawl at the Capital One cafe. He will have his paintings there and will be doing a small demo.

3.  Congratulations to two CMW Members  Sandra Driscoll and Kerry Kupferschmidt for acceptance of their paintings into the Great River Arts juried show at Little Falls – address is 122 1st St. SE.   The opening reception will be July 16, 6 to 8pm.

4.  Have you ever considered entering a National Juried Show and taking your art to a new level?  Here are the things to consider as put forward by Kathy Braud, RRWS:

Thoughts on the description of the artist
who might decide to enter a National Show

Does this artist love to make art and to compete with others who love to make art?
Does this artist have knowledge that their art work  meets  the  principles of design  and  other standards  for a painting so they are ready to jump to new levels of competition.
Have they entered the Minnesota State Fair Juried Competition (which is free and is looking for entrants) and other Juried Shows in the state?  Jurying the work holds an element of surprise and possibility, while one waits acceptance or elimination, despite payment of entry fee.
Does this artist want to sell their art?
Are they willing to go beyond their home area?
Do they participate in art crawls, member shows and group shows?
Does this artist take workshops with a desire to grow in knowledge of the art disciplines with the guidance of regional and national artists?
Does this artist belong to a larger group of artists such as Transparent Watercolor Societies of America (TWSA)?  This is one of many national art groups found in the USA that are supported by a regional network of artist members and art instructor mentor members.  When TWSA hosts a show, it is located in Michigan.  If chosen, artists often travel that distance to participate in the TWSA reception and stay overnight.  To the artist out of the area, other expenses will include the cost of shipping to and from the show.  Press, Ribbons, award monies and merchandise awards are welcome prizes and remembrances too and offer visible personal growth.

Regarding North Star Watermedia’s creation of a new national art show:

NorthStar Watermedia Society is choosing to host the first NSWS National Watermedia Show here in Minnesota in 2015 at the Hopkins Center for the Arts  .This group, NorthStar Watermedia Society, currently offers great demo’s at every monthly member meeting, a library of taped demoes, opportunities for en plaine aire painting groups that meet frequently and Artist Market, held at the MN State Fairgrounds, Fine Arts Building.
A national board is made up of NWS members, volunteers who have already put in at least eight months of planning and consideration.
For the artists in Minnesota, travel to this exhibition event will be a comfortable distance measured in hours.  They also have greater opportunities to display while this national show is new with fewer out-of-state entrants.
Artists will be given NSWS signature status when a certain number of art points are obtained by accepted paintings and/or awards.
NSWS Membership, while not necessary, is encouraged as you must be a NorthStar Watermedia Society member for future possibilities of signature status.
