by Mary Buhl

In spite of the frequent rains, the mud, the clouds, the breezes, the cool air – the birds still sing, the flowers still bloom , new babies are everywhere, the trees bud out new leaves of green ~~~ and we get to keep painting and creating.  We can be grateful for it all.

Here’s what’s going on~~~~

The Monday,

Dan Mondloch Plein Air Course  – June 6,7,8 2017  9AM – 4PM  Contact Derick Segerstrom at the Paramount Visual Arts Center.   This is a great educational opportunity for CMW member participation – Sign up soon  on the Paramount website.

Dan says: “Painting outdoors is exhilarating because you get to stretch your legs, enjoy fresh air, and immerse yourself in inspirational subjects. While inspiration runs high when painting outside, sometimes the amount of material to paint from can be overwhelming. In this workshop I will show you how I select a subject and composition from the expansive 360 degree view. Learn to simplify your subject and find strength in the power of large shapes. With the big shapes taken care of, it’s easier to loosen up and find confidence in using fluid washes, expressive brushwork, and bold color. There will be a plein air demonstration each morning and afternoon, with plenty of time for students to paint and explore on their own. Painting locations to be determined (input welcome).”

Here are examples of Dan’s work:

~2016 MEETINGS~

**October CMW Meeting
Monday, October 10th at the Paramount Studios, 6 PM

Susan Fryer Voigt will demo at the CMW October meeting at the Paramount.  She uses a mixed media approach and here is what she says:”Here is the information about what I will be demonstrating. In 2011, I was fortunate to study with a well-known American artist in Scotland. During those two weeks of painting with transparent watercolors outdoors, the instructor suggested that I might be a “layerist” instead of a transparent watercolorist. He offered his casein and acrylic paints so that I could work the way I do with acrylics, pastels, oils and casein. Since then, I have been using watercolor in a “layerist” manner – often using a roller and trowels along with brushes to attain the dimension and texture. Aquapasto is an additive that thickens watercolor and gouache can really make a difference. Even plein air painting is now pleasurable with watercolors. I will be demonstrating how I use these tools, paints, additives, and different surfaces.” Susan Fryer Voigt
Here are some examples of her work:

 **November CMW Meeting
Monday, November 14 at the Paramount Studios – 6 PM
Peggy Hall will be the demonstrator for this meeting.   Here is what she says about her work:
I call myself an “intuitive painter”   — Putting my energy into each brushstroke.  Each painting I create has my unique style and color.
My diversity can be experienced in the various media I utilize. As an artist I never limit myself.  I am open to exploring new techniques. My goal is that my brushwork will reflect my passion and love for painting. When my painting touches your heart and soul, I know it is truly good.

May Meeting -To be held on May 9th at the Paramount Visual Arts Studio 6 PM.
Our guest artist, Ellen Diederich, will be doing the demonstration.  Ellen sent this message:       2016 Ellen Jean Diedrich

“My demonstration will be on Painting Powerful Paintings with Colorful Darks. This is based on my new workshop  where we focus on values, open and closed shapes and selecting dominant value and color groups for your paintings. Several watercolor techniques will be used and discussed to create the demonstration painting. I will be using the staining pigments. In my actual workshop, students will practice  working with these design factors as they uncover the power of the staining pigments. As technical as this all sounds, I believe this will be a fun (experience)and hopefully everyone will be tempted to give up any fear of the darks.”   See and example of her work below ( Click on it to enlarge):
