Painting with Wild Abandon with Karen Knutson!

On Monday, November 13th, Karen Knutson will be our demo artist!  She teaches workshops across the United States, traveling to a different state every month!  She holds signature status in many National Watercolor Societies and has won many awards, both locally and nationally.  In December of 2016, Karen was named one of 10 Artists to Watch by the Watercolor Artist Magazine!  Her paintings have been featured in many books.

Karen is excited to demonstrate lots of fun tricks, using acrylicsFor those of you who are watercolorists, please come and see some new tricks.  You may be able to use them in your watercolors as well, OR Karen may sway you over to trying acrylic after all!  She loves the brightness of the colors and the fact that one can layer and build such depth, using acrylics.  You become a bit of an archaeologist as you remove layers later on and make discoveries underneath!  Karen calls this demonstration process, “Painting like Gustav Klimt” because it results in tiny colorful shapes of exciting colors like he did in his paintings.  She will also be sharing many gold special effects like Gustav used also.  Her demonstration will include dropping liquid acrylic on the paper and then scraping it, using a credit card.  The students always LOVE this process!  We will touch on the subject of wire drawing, one of Karen’s favorite things EVER!   Karen states about her use of acrylics, “Don’t get me wrong.  I still enjoy using watercolor too, but I’m a painter first.  I will use whatever media works to produce the effects that I want.  If you struggle with design and composition, I have some tricks up my sleeve for that too!”  To see more of Karen Knutson’s paintings, go to her website, www.karenknutson.com or her blog,

CMW Meeting- Monday, October 9, 2017 at the Paramount Art Studios -the meeting was held with Suz Galloway demonstrating her wet into wet approach to underwater rocks and had many other paintings available for viewing.  Suz also  had her very realistic botanical paintings available so we were able to see her wide scope of talent.

CMW Meeting- November 13, 2017 at the Paramount Art Studios – registration at 6 PM; meeting begins at 6:20 pm followed by a demo by Karen Knutson. Karen is known for her unique contemporary semi-abstract paintings. Here are some examples of her work. Her website is karenknutson.com.

Here’s some information from Karen’s website:

“I paint watercolors because I love its free and wild qualities, forcing the artist to adjust to its many moods. For the past few years, I’ve added collage and acrylic, which produces wonderful textures and color discoveries. My paintings are sometimes totally abstract, and sometimes there is something recognizable in the painting. I like my paintings to be different than “normal paintings” – anything that will make the viewer take a second look and be drawn into the painting! I used to be attracted to paintings with unusual colors, but now I’m drawn to paintings with dynamic design. First and foremost, I like to have fun while I paint, and I’m constantly trying out new things, so that I will grow as an artist. I feel like the luckiest person alive to be able to do something that I love so much!
My paintings are featured in Splash 6, Watercolor, Fun and Free, and Searching for the Artist Within , Watercolor- The Spirit of Spontaneity, Watercolor without Boundaries, The Artistic Touch 4, Watercolor- Making your Mark, and the magazine, Watercolor Magic (Aug.’04). I am a signature member of Transparent Watercolor Society of America,(formerly known as Midwest Watercolor Society), San Diego Watercolor Society, Red River Watercolor Society, the Montana Watercolor Society, and the Northern Plains Watercolor Society, the Minnesota Watercolor Society, NorthStar Watermedia Society, and Missouri Watercolor Society.”
