   ~Shows~

East Bank Gallery Show in Sioux Falls, SD
The Art Reception was held Friday, July 7th.  Mary Buhl attended this reception to give an update on the art and to speak to attendees.  This was accomplished at 6:30 PM.  Here is the report that Mary sent to the CMW Board:

“I wanted to report on the reception.  First if all our show looked terrific.  Ruthmary seemed very pleased with it.  She took me around to every painting and wanted to know about the paintings and the artists plus a little about the various  techniques.  The staff raved about the show and the wonderful color and variety of paintings as did some of the visitors.   I spoke to a watercolor teacher who was very interested in our organizational activities and our different types of gatherings.  I also talked to a beginning artist, a woman who has retired,  a young man who was so excited about the show and how to get to paint as well as those paintings in the show;  another was an art promoter and more people who came to my talk.  They wanted to know about our organization and how we came to be and develop –  I couldn’t believe how fast the time went.

My observation is that the individual artists are hungering for education from recognized and/or nationally known artists for development and for connection and support from others.  They were very surprised at how developed we are with our activities and collaboration with the Paramount.  One of the ladies is going to get in touch with me and may join our group.  I gave out a few pamphlets also.

I’m glad I went and was proud of our organization.  Ruthmary was thrilled with our portion of the show.  There were about 8-10 other artists showing and only one other speaker.”

Mark your calendars

Happy New Year!!

A new year is marked all over the world as a new beginning.  It’s great that we let ourselves be free of the past in whatever way we wish.  As CMW moves forward into 2017, there are lots of opportunities for growth, connecting and participating in shows.  The 2017 Calendar will be online in the near future.  Meanwhile here are some news items.

CMW Board Changes:
We say goodbye to Linda Addicott who served as Vice President and to Robyn York who served as Treasurer these past years.  They did a wonderful job and worked to further help define  these positions in making them very functional for the CMW Board and members.

Welcome to our new Vice President, Gordon Schrank .  We look forward to his leadership as he lines up our demo speakers and helps plan our workshops – plus keeps the board on track with all of CMW activities.

We also welcome our new Treasurer, Yvonne Schrank.   She will be the financial tracker, organizer of registrations, keeper of CMW assets and assist the board in their fiduciary responsibilities.

Meetings

At the November meeting, Peggy Hall gave a demonstration on mixed media using a variety of materials.  Here is her completed work from that demo. It is titled “Sunflower”.

The December meeting was full of discussion about the November $50 sale with lots of ideas that resulted.  The Board will be taking this up in the coming year.

It was fun to give and receive original Christmas cards from colleagues – a sampling is depicted here.

Yvonne Schrank created a Christmas centerpiece for a drawing and that was won by Donna Jarvae.

President’s Challenge: Kerry Kupferschmidt announced that the President’s Challenge to the membership was “Spring’s the Thing”.  Members are invited to paint an interpretation along that theme and bring it to show at the February 13th meeting.  This is a fun and supportive meeting.  Feel free to ask for input as you wish.

Shows
Waite Park Library Show will be Feb. 1-28th, 2017.  Drop off is Feb. 1 from 4-5 pm.

Good Shepherd Nursing Home Show in Sauk Rapids will be held in April/May.  Other details to follow.

  1. Meetings

Monday, May 9th Meeting -To be held on May 9th at the Paramount Visual Arts Studio 6 PM.   Our guest artist, Ellen Diederich, will be doing the demonstration. Ellen sent this message: 2016 Ellen Jean Diedrich

“My demonstration will be on Painting Powerful Paintings with Colorful Darks. This is based on my new workshop where we focus on values, open and closed shapes and selecting dominant value and color groups for your paintings. Several watercolor techniques will be used and discussed to create the demonstration painting. I will be using the staining pigments. In my actual workshop, students will practice working with these design factors as they uncover the power of the staining pigments. As technical as this all sounds, I believe this will be a fun (experience)and hopefully everyone will be tempted to give up any fear of the darks.” See and example of her work below ( Click on it to enlarge):

3.  Events

*Dan Mondloch – Plein Air Workshop June 7-9
Here is what Dan says:

“Painting outdoors is exhilarating because you get to stretch your legs, enjoy
fresh air, and immerse yourself in inspirational subjects. While inspiration runs
high when painting outside, sometimes the amount of material to paint from
can be overwhelming. In this workshop I will show you how I select a subject and
composition from the expansive 360 degree view. Learn to simplify your subject
and find strength in the power of large shapes. With the big shapes taken care
of, it’s easier to loosen up and find confidence in using fluid washes, expressive
brushwork, and bold color. There will be a plein air demonstration each morning
and afternoon, with plenty of time for students to paint and explore on their
own. Painting locations to be determined (input welcome).”
