Doug Lien

Doug-Portrait-236x300

Doug joined the Central Minnesota Watercolorists while living in St. Cloud in 1991. Through the group’s workshops and help from its members, he managed to pick up the skills he needed to become commercially successful.

“It was never my intention to have a second career as an artist,” Lien explains.  “But, when Diane Woit (one of the founding members of the Central Minnesota Watercolorists), and an instructor then teaching a class at the Paramount, told me to ‘paint what you know,’ that’s when I started to be really enthusiastic about painting.”

Doug now does paintings for minor league baseball teams, college football teams, junior hockey leagues and golf courses on a regular basis, as well as private commissions.  He has also taught Community Education classes, art for homeschoolers and demonstrated at several events.

His clients have included:

  • University of Minnesota, Duluth football program
  • St. John’s University football program
  • Gustavus Adolphus College Athletic Department
  • St. Cloud State University hockey and basketball programs
  • Nashville Sounds minor league baseball team
  • Fargo/Moorhead RedHawks minor league baseball team
  • Waterloo Blackhawks, USHL junior hockey club
  • Numerous golf courses (Albany, Blackberry Ridge, Wapicada, and Pebble Creek, among others)

He currently lives near Grand Rapids, Minnesota with his wife Wanda.

Doug’s primary influences have been John Salminen, Doug Lew, Raleigh Kinney, Dan Mondloch and Frank Francese among others.
